The Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence would like to invite tertiary students, with an interest in Latin America, from across Aotearoa to attend the ‘Standing in the Future: New Zealand and the Indo-Pacific Region’ conference to be held in Wellington on 14 July 2021

The conference is being delivered by the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs (NZIIA) and will bring together renowned thinkers and experts, members of the diplomatic community and government agencies to have conversations around New Zealand within Indo-Pacific and Latin America context, using the lens of standing in the future.

About the Conference

Standing in the future of regions such as the Indo-Pacific and Latin America isn’t about predicting the future but it is about imagining, anticipating and exploring the long-term issues or challenges shaping their future. This is the framework for our conference.

The Indo-Pacific region and Latin America are changing fast not only because of the effects of great power dynamics, economic and trade patterns, climate change, sustainability, demographic and social changes, but also due to the on-going impacts of Covid-19. Regional cooperation will be a key factor in managing and mitigating the political, economic, social and environmental uncertainty created by these trends. This is particularly so for small countries such as New Zealand. APEC is one of the key regional organisations with a role to play in these regions and with New Zealand hosting APEC in 2021 we are in a key position to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the regions.
